Temperature Swings

October 2007

As I write this October article in early September, I can already feel the weather changing. The first time that I have worn a jacket (not counting rain gear) since Spring came the other day when the temperature was in the low 60s and the sky was cloudy. For me, the shorter days and cooler weather mark the end of summer fun and the beginning of winter depression.

Don’t get me wrong, I will ride year round provided there isn’t snow and ice on the road. But the carefree days of summer riding – long sunny days, not worrying about a jacket or chaps or something to keep your ears warm – are slowly fading away.

Some people in the Chapter prefer riding in cooler weather and many will ride year round as well. It just takes a little more planning around weather, road conditions and wardrobe.

With Fall approaching, we are likely to see greater swings in temperature. Mornings are much cooler and the temperature falls quickly in the evening, but it can be quite warm during the day. As a rider, we have to have plan ahead to have clothing to keep us warm while not burning up during the middle of the day. This is much easier for those with saddlebags, but I have seen some creative packing by our Chapter members. Shivering isn’t any fun. Make sure you have your clear lenses too since the sun is setting sooner.

Fall also brings wetter weather. With the dry spell we had all Summer, one good rain shower can seem like a major deluge. Keep an eye on the forecast and drag your rain gear with you. Plus, rain gear can help keep you warm if you don’t have a jacket with you for that late night ride home.

And of course there are always the standard things to watch out for:

• Deer and other animals are more active and likely to be on the road

• Moist leaves can be slick as snot

• Leaves and other debris covering road markings

• Rural areas will see more farm equipment on the roads

So, time to start digging out the jackets, chaps, gauntlet gloves, neck warmer, and even a full face helmet. Not that I want to wear any of that just yet, but I want them available and ready so I can go ride.

Ride Safe! Rich
