Alcohol and You

August 2007

So, you have read the title and you think this doesn’t apply to you. You are invincible, just like when you were 12 years old and couldn’t seem to get hurt no matter what crazy stunt you pulled. Think again. We are all fallible human beings and we can all make mistakes. The reality is, now that we are all over the legal drinking age, we have this other factor that can screw with our sense of invincibility and cause us to make poor decisions.

I am sure you have heard the expression – “instant asshole, just add alcohol.” Well, it could easily read – “instant dumbass, just add alcohol.” Face it, we probably all know somebody, or of someone, who has died in an alcoholrelated accident. Some of us know way too many.

As the Safety Officer, it is not my job to preach. However, I think it is my job to remind, coach, cajole, teach, and pester and ultimately to try to offer you all some important things to think about that you hopefully consider in your riding.

* Here are a few things you definitely need to know:

* Having any alcohol in one’s body increases the chance of crashing by FIVE times.

* Having a blood alcohol content greater than 0.05% increases the risk of crashing by about 40 times. (In case you were wondering, the legal limits are Missouri = 0.08%, Illinois = 0.08%) Around 46% of all motorcyclists killed in crashes were using alcohol
*One fourth of all fatal alcoholrelated motorcycle crashes involve motorcyclists running off the road, overturning, or falling from the motorcycle rather than striking another object. (Source: Motorcycle Safety Foundation)

Drinking and motorcycles don’t mix.

If you are out and about and choose to drink, there are really only two solid options to ensure you make it home safely:

* Wait until all the alcohol has cleared from your system (even if it means staying overnight) before heading out on your own.

* Leave the motorcycle in a secure location and get a ride home (ex. taxi, bus, calling your wife to pick you up, even riding bitch with a sober rider is better than dying).

Please, for your family, your friends, and all of us around you, make the right decision.

Ride Safe! Rich
