June 2007 Now that we are charging into the warm months of the year, I am sure you have all seen the massive amounts of road construction going on. It seems like on every road we ride, there is some sort of work going on. Pot hole repairs (still), bridge work, road widening, the whole Highway 40 fiasco all working to screw up our riding season. So, you are thinking, why should I care? Actually, all this construction can cause all sorts of potential problems. The obvious one is irregular road surfaces. Whether it is gravel spilled on the road, detours on to the shoulder or across drainage grates, ground down asphalt, or the worst – uneven pavement, your attention is required. Each construction site will give you unique challenges. Looking as far ahead as possible and having a plan for specific problems in advance will help with these situations. If that wasn’t enough, we have to deal with the mess of four-wheelers around us. As lane closures and detours happen, these people start freaking out and basically panicking when they realize they haven’t been paying attention. How many times have you seen that “urgent” lane change when someone realizes they have to get over before their lane ends? When you know going in that something like that can happen, you can make it a point to start looking out for the idiot that will panic, and adjust your speed and/or position to avoid a conflict.
