New Safety Officer

May 2007

As many of you are aware, John Springmeyer is stepping down as our Safety Officer after supporting the Chapter in this roll for over 6 years. John has more to offer the Chapter, but recent growth and opportunities with his business has been sapping his time and not letting him put the effort and energy he wanted into the Chapter position. I know he will miss being the Safety Officer. Please make sure to thank John for all the guidance he has provided us.

On my end, I look forward to the challenge of the Safety Officer position and hope to provide each of you with new riding strategies, tactics and tips. Safety is something that each of us is responsible for and I hope to provide you with some new thoughts and ideas to try to implement as you ride.

Here is a little about me: I have been riding motorcycles since 1990. Much of my early experience was off-road riding with some forays into Hare Scrambles and Grand Prix racing along with dual-sport riding (think on-and off-road in the same trip). As we have all experienced, work and other things keep you from riding as much as you want, so to try to keep on a motorcycle more often (and take care of family, home, and work), I decided to get a real street bike – yes, a Harley-Davidson. My 2003 Road King now has 80,000 miles on the odometer and there seems to be no end in sight.

I knew there was more for me to learn, so I have taken the Beginner Rider

Course (very entertaining as well as identifying a few bad habits I carried over from my dirt riding days) and the Experienced Rider Course (it was an absolute blast and gave me the opportunity for someone to critique my bike handling skills in a controlled environment). I will cover more on these courses and why you should take them in a later article. I have even had Rider Coaches pushing me to take the MSF Rider Coach training to become a teacher as well. Eventually I will find the time to get my certification.

Every one always seems to ask if you have been down. We all know the expression of two types of riders – ones that have been down and those that will. Personally, I have been hit by a car in upstate New York and stayed up and hit by a deer in Jefferson County and went down. Each was a very strong learning experience.

I look forward to serving as your Safety Officer. If you have feedback on articles or ideas for new articles or stories you would like to hear or read about, please be sure to let me know. I am at almost every event and Chapter meeting, and can also be reached at roadking@gmail.com.
